ABOUT THE ARTIST

Once, during a review of my work at Emily Carr, a professor described my style as polyamorous. That is to say, I am a multidisciplinary artist in love with a number of styles, mediums, and subjects.

I explore everything from the very flat 2d style of vector graphics to the literally sculptural qualities of clay. Subject matter I faithfully return to in my art are depictions of nature, animals, imaginary creatures and humans. Through anthropomorphism of different subjects, I am able to play with the expectations and assumptions of gender, race, and identity that we culturally project onto ‘the other’ and each other. I eagerly engage with heavy topics and humour and absurdity. I find cuteness, humour, pop-culture, and aesthetics to be great tools for exploring complex topics in a more accessible way.

There is a sense of play in my artistic practice that I am seriously committed to. I enjoy working in the space above and to the side of binary thinking.

Binaries I like to peek at from my vantage point:

  • feminine and masculine
  • serious and cute
  • serious and the absurd
  • flat illustration and sculptural objects
  • dystopia and utopia
  • private and public
  • us and the other
  • white and non-white
  • humans and animals
  • humans and monsters
  • straight and queer

I am from Metro Vancouver and teach art to all ages.
